Why see a physiotherapist?

Today is World Physiotherapy Day – a global event recognising the incredible role physiotherapists play in our community. At Next Wave we are celebrating the contribution our physiotherapists, Jonathan Wray and Stephanie Lock, play in helping our community to move, think and feel alive.

What is physiotherapy?

Physiotherapists are health professional who have a key role in helping people achieve their goals and fulfil their potential. Physiotherapists work in a variety of settings from treating musculoskeletal complaints to neurological rehabilitation, cardiac rehabilitation and working with paediatric conditions. Usually after graduating a physiotherapist will start to specialise in a particular area but they will still bring their knowledge of the other disciplines with them making them a highly affective health care professional.

Physiotherapy at Next Wave

Our physiotherapists at Next Wave have specialised in being able to treat musculoskeletal conditions. They play an important role in the prevention, maintenance and treatment of musculoskeletal issues to help people get the most out of their life. Whether its an acute sporting injury or more persistent pain condition our physiotherapists use advanced assessment and treatment interventions to minimise the impact a patients condition may be having on them and guide them back to recovery and beyond.

Our physiotherapists recognise the benefit of being part of a team of health care professionals especially when treating patients with complex needs. They work in collaboration with Next Wave Occupational Therapists, Naturopaths, local GP’s surgeons and psychologists for a multi-faceted approach to your total health.

What are the common reasons people seek physiotherapy at Next Wave?

  • Neck, back and shoulder pain

  • Lateral Hip Pain

  • Persistent or chronic pain

  • Headaches and migraines

  • Muscle soreness

  • Joint pain

  • Arthritis

  • Pre or post surgical rehabilitation

What treatments do Next Wave physiotherapists use?

At Next Wave Therapy we are absolutely committed to staying fully informed and up to date about the latest research to make sure that every treatment we deliver is as effective as possible. We have a strong focus on working in a collaborative way with our patients, using treatment approaches such:

  • Exercise based rehabilitation to improve strength and mobility

  • Joint mobilisation and manipulation to reduce pain and stiffness

  • Clinical Pilates for muscle re-training and to improve movement control

  • Acupuncture and dry needling

  • Soft tissue mobilisation (massage)

On a typical day at Next Wave, you might see a patient that has been treated with Osteopathic techniques such as joint manipulation and soft tissue mobilisation who then moves into the studio to begin a specific targeted exercise program. Someone at later stage rehabilitation may be attending a clinical Pilates session or working on a strength and conditioning program to get them back to full recovery and beyond.

Where our physiotherapists really set themselves apart however is by taking time to get to the heart of a patients problem. Next Wave physiotherapist use advanced assessment techniques and high levels of clinical reasoning to design a treatment plan that will enable you to fully participate in life.

Did you know that physiotherapists are GP’s most recommended healthcare practitioner? As first contact practitioners you don’t need a referral to see a physiotherapist. #choosephysio
