Getting a Good Nights Sleep NATx Talks

Supporting Healthy Sleep Naturally

We spend about a third of our life sleeping. It is essential for restoring physical and mental health, maintaining immune function and supporting energy and vitality. Without adequate sleep our health can quickly deteriorate and have serious consequences.

Insomnia is the most common sleep disorder, and affects 40 -50% of Australians at any one time. Labelled a modern day epidemic, insomnia is associated with early mortality, depression, anxiety, hypertension, obesity, impaired glucose metabolism, chronic pain and reduced immune function. In addition to these major health concerns, the financial costs of primary sleep disturbance, restless leg syndrome and sleep apnoea estimates to total $4.3 billion in Australia.

Complementary Medicines are used frequently by people with insomnia. Often they are looking for effective treatment that does not have side effects or withdrawal symptoms. Nutritional and herbal medicines do not have these drawbacks. Instead they can treat underlying causes to insomnia, provide symptomatic relief and address other contributing factors of digestive, nervous, endocrine and immune systems.

Occupational Therapists play an important role in helping people get a good nights sleep. They can help a person to address environmental, psychological, emotional and occupational factors that impact sleep onset and quality.
